About ProvPlan > Mission & History
The Providence Plan’s mission is to improve the economic and social well-being of the City, its residents, and its neighborhoods. We provide data analysis for government agencies and community groups on a variety of issues, such as economic development, public safety, health, jobs, and education. We also operate programs that focus on children’s well-being, workforce development, and community building. The Providence Plan was launched in 1992 as a partnership between the State of Rhode Island, the City of Providence, and the private sector. We started with a small office, a handful of staff, and a couple of short-term grants. Over the past thirteen years, The Providence Plan has grown significantly. While  Providence is still our major focus, we have begun to build our data-analysis capacity to serve a more statewide audience. We have also expanded our portfolio to include programs that directly link to our data and information work. Ready to Learn Providence, YouthBuild Providence, and the Local Learning Partnership are examples of ProvPlan efforts to bring data and programs together. As a result, today’s Providence Plan consists of four offices, 30+ staff, and an operating budget of $2.7 million. Going forward, we hope to develop our information capacity to provide more real-time information to users, serve a more statewide audience, and seed new initiatives consistent with our organizational mission. This version of the ProvPlan Web site represents a significant upgrade from previous editions. We hope that the new architecture and features such as our “Map of the Month” will create a better Web experience for you. Please sign up for our e-newsletter so we can update you on our latest work.
