Copper Thefts, First Quarter 2008
The combination of unprecedented numbers of foreclosed properties and high copper prices has driven a rash of copper thefts across many Providence Neighborhoods. In the first quarter of 2008, at least 81 (18%) of the 439 reported burglaries involved stripping of copper piping or electrical wiring. This type of burglary is particularly devastating for neighborhoods because the increased cost of repairing stripped properties makes them less desirable rehabilitation candidates.
