Several communities and private entities have expressed interest in wind power as a cost-efficient, environmentally sound, alternative energy source. The Providence Plan, in affiliation with the Wind Power Rhode Island Project, now offers an Internet Map Server (IMS) application for the preliminary assessment of wind turbine sites in the state of Rhode Island. Coordination for this project provided by Roger Williams University.
Be aware that this wind map is an extrapolated, or estimated, surface based on data points that are themselves estimates generated from a model. See DOCUMENTATION of The New England Wind Map for further explanation of how regional wind data is created.
The Wind Mapper features average wind speed data from AWS Truewind, as well as areas constrained by bedrock, slope, hydric soils or seasonal high water tables (RIGIS data).
The Wind Mapper is intended as a general resource for those interested in exploring the possibility of wind power in their community and is NOT a substitute for site-level evaluation.
